 Gender identity is a popular topic in modern times. Ursula Le Guin published Left Hand of Darkness over 50 years ago, addressing topics such as gender and society at the beginning of their upheaval. She creates a world who's creatures are very similar to our own, ones that we can blend in and pass for. Their biology severely differs, an entirely new form of reproduction introduced. Yet our societies are much the same. Corruption still exists, the murder of the main character's best friend as he tries to protect him from authorities, shows that gender might not be the cause of all our problems. There are different sides to this opinion. Some believe gender equality would completely change the world, that everything would be perfect. But I think of something else - it wouldn't be perfect because we still have our human impulses. Fixing one societal problem only proves that we caused it, and it can happen again. Interview with a Vampire (6 points)

My recreational reading has been limited to fantasy and sci-fi youth novels. At the point which I would have started reading "adult" books I became less interested in books. However, Ann Rice's Interview with a Vampire made me regret not getting into literature. The way she writes is enthralling, and even though I would have never thought a story like this to be interesting, I couldn't put it down.  Love/Lust In the 1970's I am not sure exactly how much gay love was accepted. Ann Rice pushed so many taboo boundaries, but she made them so interesting you almost forgot. Necrophilia, pedophilia, gay love, murder, desecration, anti-christian, unmoral in ever sense. But this does not defile the book. Louis has many experiences that cannot be described by the author. His bond with Lestat being the main one. Akata Witch (5 points)

 I can say for a fact I was never a fan of Harry Potter. I loved magic and all sorts of fantasy, but I always regarded Harry Potter as, well, trash. I know Rowling was the first to do a lot of things, but she was way over-glorified for my liking. Praised as a female writer, and promoter of women, yet stars a male child who's story is just a copy of old Greeco-Roman myths. Love triangle and drama, it was clearly meant for children with no idea what life is like. Even if magic were real, it paints a very perfect image of how cleanly things are tied up. So, if I hated Harry Potter this much, what did I think Akata Witch had to offer? If I could have ever got off the "this is just Harry Potter" part I would have seen the other stuff sooner. It had unique aspects, juju instead of mana, rituals, sacrifices, murder mystery, racial and gender discrimination. And was I impressed? Unfortunately, not at all.
